This week, Edward Hemingway shows off his baking skills; book and publishing organizations celebrate a fruitful book drive; Valerio Vidali and Violeta Lópiz visit New York City; and Trudi Trueit meets fans in the Seattle community.
Author-illustrator Edward Hemingway demonstrated his cooking baking prowess by making 16 dozen cookies shaped and decorated to look like the main character in his new picture book, Tough Cookie: A Christmas Story (Holt). Hemingway shared the cookies with attendees at his launch party, held at the Country Bookshelf in Bozeman, Mont., on Small Business Saturday, and at other readings in the area. Here, he hands out the treats to fans at the Bozeman Public Library.
A Bounty of Books
Young to Publishing Group, Women’s National Book Association, and the Children’s Book Council recently partnered to host a book drive, collecting children’s, middle grade, YA, and Spanish-language books from publishers and other donors. The books will go to the literacy nonprofit Behind the Book. On November 29, members of the three groups gathered at the CBC’s offices to wrap the books and celebrate the holidays.
The Forest for the Trees
Violeta Lópiz (l.) and Valerio Vidali, illustrators of The Forest by Riccardo Bozzi (Enchanted Lion), visited New York City last month to celebrate the selection of their book as a New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book of 2018. In addition to attending parties and workshops for adults, the pair shared their book with children in schools across the boroughs, including (seen here) kindergarteners at the International School of Brooklyn.
Trudi Trueit (standing), author of the Explorer Academy series, recently spoke to attendees at an event held by the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators of Western Washington. Also in the photo is illustrator Laurie Ann Thompson (l.) and author Suzanne Williams. The programming was part of a celebration of authors and books called “Inside Story,” held at the Seattle Public Library. Trueit, a Seattle native, discussed the first book in the Explorer Academy series, The Nebula Secret (Under the Stars). She also shared a sneak peek of the second book, The Falcon’s Feather, coming out next March.
