This month, Deborah Bradseth at Tugboat Design reimagines the cover of A Daughter’s a Daughter by indie author Irene Vartanoff, who called the new design “a more accurate evocation of what my story is about.”

The decorative font on the original was hard to read. I made the type softer for the redesign.

The original’s solitary woman on the empty beach gave a hardened, cold tone. With the new design, we achieved a lighter, more hopeful feeling, which is accomplished via the colors, people, and dog walking on the beach.

When combining multiple images, be sure they look natural. I added shadows to make it look as if the couple were really walking the beach. The original cover didn’t do that.

The type is large, but it doesn’t compete for attention with the imagery at the bottom. Eyes are drawn from the title to the scene below.
