The Faculty of English at Cambridge University has responded to a student petition asking for the “decolonisation” of reading lists, and for academics to ensure that Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) authors are represented as part of the basic curriculum.
With that in mind, here are 10 writers who should be everyone’s reading list.
1. Chinua Achebe
The Nigerian author was 27 when his novel Things Fall Apart was published. Like much of his work, it examined the effects of colonialism on his homeland, particularly the introduction of Christianity into tribalistic society. Achebe spent the later part of his life as an academic in the USA.
